Mustang GT Project

This car was hit in the left quarter panel. The rear axle was bent. We will paint the car complete. My students enthusiastically removed the convertible top, deck lid, hood, moldings and mirrors. The left fender and door had poor alignment. The door and fender almost touched each other. The students adjusted the fender to move it forward for better alignment with the door. We used paint stripper on the hood and deck lid. The deck lid had bondo-filled dents and rust holes. A student repaired the damaged plastic bumper covers.

The second year students installed a used rear end. Kyle butt-welded a patch panel in the right quarter panel, ahead of the wheel. The body of the car was stripped and sprayed with epoxy primer and surfacer. The replacement quarter panel was a used part. The students made a vertical splice joint in the wheel opening area. They had to splice the wheel house and the trunk drop off. They flanged the replacement quarter panel so it would slide into place under the existing quarter panel at the splice joint.

panel, tail light and

removed with paint

The stripped hood is
treated with acid.

Kyle sands the top coat
with 80 grit sandpaper
on a DA.
 

 

 

 

Kyle cut out the rust hole,
fabricated a patch panel &
butt-welded the panel in
place. He will make a
continuous weld around
the perimeter.

 

 

Kyle brushes self-etch primer
onto the spliced wheel house.
 
Kyle and Brandon have
installed the quarter panel
